Rapid Granular Avalanches
نویسنده
چکیده
Granular avalanches are one of the fundamental grain transport mechanisms in our natural environment and in many industrial grain-processing flows. In recent years significant progress has been made in describing the flow of granular avalanches over complex rigid topography. Often the fluid-like granular avalanches flow over a region of solid-like grains at which there may be erosion or deposition. These phase-transition flows are very poorly understood, yet are of crucial importance in industrial rotating tumblers in which powders and grains are mixed. This paper reviews recent work on granular avalanche flows and presents a generalization of the Savage–Hutter theory that includes both surface and basal erosion and deposition. Elementary similarity and shock wave solutions are reviewed and a simple mass-coupling to a rigid body of grains is used to investigate the steady mixing of grains of equal size in a rotating tumbler of circular cross-section.

We report experimental measurements of avalanche behavior of thin granular layers on an inclined plane for low volume flow rate. The dynamical properties of avalanches were quantitatively and qualitatively different for smooth glass beads compared to irregular granular materials such as sand. Two scenarios for granular avalanches on an incline are identified and a theoretical explanation for th...

We develop a continuum description of partially fluidized granular flows. Our theory is based on the hydrodynamic equation for the flow coupled with the order parameter equation, which describes the transition between flowing and static components of the granular system. This theory captures important phenomenology recently observed in experiments with granular flows on rough inclined planes [A...
متن کاملParticle Image Velocimetry (PIV) for Granular Avalanches on Inclined Planes
This paper is concerned with experimental results of sand avalanches flowing down inclined plexiglass chutes with lateral confinement. Specifically we introduce the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique for granular avalanches. We discuss the differences and problems in comparison with “usual” PIV. After this, we present surface and side velocity measurements that are obtained at different...
متن کاملChannelized free-surface flow of cohesionless granular avalanches in a chute with shallow lateral curvature
A series of laboratory experiments and numerical simulations have been performed to investigate the rapid fluid-like flow of a finite mass of granular material down a chute with partial lateral confinement. The chute consists of a section inclined at 40◦ to the horizontal, which is connected to a plane run-out zone by a smooth transition. The flow is confined on the inclined section by a shallo...
